One of the earliest and most attractive of Victorian color-plate gift books. John Gibson Lockhart (1794-1854) was a Scottish attorney, editor, critic, and scholar who is best-known for his biography of his father-in-law Sir Walter Scott. His translations and commentaries of the Spanish ballads related to the Moorish Era, first published in 1823, comprised a work of true scholarship, but the romance and gallantry inherent in the songs led to this lavish illustrated reprint. Illustrated with heroic and poignant images and printed in a variety of colors.
