Description
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Machang Phase, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. A lovely bichrome pottery vessel created more than 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from what is known as Gansu or Qinghai province today. The handsome form sits on a small round base, dramatically angles out to a low corset, then develops to a full body with a short cylindrical neck and twin looped handles. The outer surface and inner mouth are elaborately decorated with linear and stylized geometric patterns via fired-on mineral-based pigments of black and deep red hues. A superb and very old example. Size: 6.5" in diameter x 5.625" H (16.5 cm x 14.3 cm)
