China, Shang Dynasty, ca. 11th century BCE. This is a bronze axe head with a beautifully symmetrical hollow body with a still-sharp blade and a fluted butt. Incised on the butt is a small design that looks like a knife - possibly some kind of maker's mark or identification. This axe head was not meant to be used in battle, but instead was made to be an accompaniment to burial. Bronze weapons seem to have had some particular significance in burial, possibly indicating a higher status individual. For example, in a mass grave of Shang-period soldiers excavated by archaeologists at Yan, there were over 30 shafted weapons - but only two were bronze.
