Description
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Zenu/Sinu peoples, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fascinating small stone finial, carved as a single piece of a soft green stone - perhaps a soapstone - that shows a scene that is baffling to the modern eye but was probably instantly understandable to the people who made it. Two figures are seated with their backs to each other (but not touching). One looks human; the other is human-shaped but has an interestingly geometric face. The former sits with hands to his knees, the latter with hands to his face. A thick curved line connects their heads, and they sit atop a turtle or broad-backed lizard; below that is the blank, rectangular stone to be slotted into whatever this piece topped. Size: 2.4" W x 3.55" H (6.1 cm x 9 cm)
