Second half 19th century, 328 x 230 cm, East Caucasus

In this large red-ground Kuba sumakh, three huge cartouche medallions linked at their tips are aligned on the central axis. A fourth large device is cut by the border at one end of the field. An octagon with a star-shaped interior drawing reminiscent of the "Crivelli" star constitutes the centre of each of the medallions. The same octagons have been repeated eight times as accompanying motifs outside the medallions. The spaces left undecorated by the main design are covered in many small devices. – Except for minor repairs and corroded brown sections, the sumakh is well preserved.
