Description

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche IV, ca. 400 to 500 CE. Manifesting the remarkable artistry and technique of the Moche, this bichrome pottery vessel depicts a parrot holding a corn cob, its head nicely modeled at one end of the stirrup with large bulging eyes, a gracefully curved beak, and finely painted wavy feather details, its wings and talons holding a corn cob beautifully painted upon the round body of the vessel. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds were regarded as metapors for the sun, models for hunters and warriors given their strong talons, acuity, and speed, and ideal communicators with the celestial gods. Parrots, in fact, were believed to be sacred incarnations of sky deities. Beyond this rich symbolism, the aesthetic quality of this piece is absolutely breathtaking. Size: 5.625" in diameter x 8.5" H (14.3 cm x 21.6 cm)
