Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche IV, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A large, flat-bottomed, and spherical terracotta stirrup-spouted vessel with stepped, linear, and spiralized fine-line motifs painted in a russet-hue atop a cream ground. Pieces like these were often used for holding sacred fermented liquids consumed during ceremonies or placed in graves as offerings. A wonderful example, impressive for its elegant form as well as its painted decorative program. Size: 10.375" H (26.4 cm).

Vessel repaired from several pieces with light restoration, resurfacing, and overpainting along break lines. Expected age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, fading to pigmentation, otherwise very good.
