Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern US, Hopi Tribe, ca. 1950 CE. This is a gorgeous cylindrical clay fired and burnished deep cylinder vase with an elaborate bird motif on the exterior. Large and small black rings are painted just below the rim; the vase sits on a flat foot. The designs depict the thunderbird, an important motif in indigenous Southwestern mythology (and, indeed, throughout North America!). Using a classic Hopi stylized, geometric rendering, the two thunderbirds here are symbols of calling for rain in their desert homeland; the thunderbird is also sometimes known as the "rainbird". This vase has a relatively unique shape and the artwork is very well done! Size: 3.3" W x 5.25" H (8.4 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Poway, CA private collection.
