Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, ca. 125 to 250 CE. A round-bottomed polychrome pottery bowl with an elaborate decorative/iconographic program in shades of red, brown, tan, grey, and black. The slightly concave walls feature a profile human headed underworld deity with a headdress comprised of a trail of proliferous trophy head deities or tasters - with simplified faces, whiskers, and forehead ornaments interconnected, with the tongue one one joining the brow of the next, suggesting a string of bizarre beads. Above this figure and just beneath the rim of the bowl is a narrower register of abstract, stylized head motifs. Size: 8.125" W x 3.5" H (20.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
