Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A breathtaking trefoil oinochoe created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to black glazed vessels. The surface of this example of Gnathian ware presents several registers adorning the neck and shoulder, some demarcated by incised double lines, featuring a wide band of beautifully painted white and yellow grapevines and tendrils, red and white bands, a band of delicate red and yellow floral clusters, and a "V" pattern in white. Beneath the band of grapes is a white dove with details, i.e. the wings, tailfeathers, neckline, and eye, delineated in red pigment. Most intriguingly, the bird appears to sit in a ring of white dots perhaps representing eggs. Above the bird is a register featuring trios of dots, picking up on this iconography, alternating with tri-tipped clusters, two of which flank the bird below. Overall, a lovely example that demonstrates skillful technique and an overall polychromatic effect characteristic of Gnathia. Size: 4.25" W at widest point x 7.5" H (10.8 cm x 19 cm)
