Item Details
Description
South Arabian, Romano-Egyptian influence, ca. 1st century BCE. A mold-made figure of a woman atop a camel. Her clothing is detailed and she holds something round in her lap; she wears a veil but her face is exposed. Her face and hair are naturalistic. The camel stands; he wears a harness but the reins do not seem to go to the woman and blend into his neck. Size: 6.5" L x 6.45" H (16.5 cm x 16.4 cm)

The Romano-Egyptian influence on the piece is clear and it almost looks Hellenistic, speaking to the opening of trade routes - especially sea trade routes - through this region with Greek and Roman cultures further north, as well as repeated military incursions, particularly from the Romans.

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
