Three magical cassia seeds from the moon float down into the rakan's black bowl. The rakan (arhat in Sanskrit, luohan in Chinese) was a Buddhist practitioner who reached enlightenment through a combination of meditation and magic. Coming from the Hindu tradition, he is seen collecting the seeds that supposedly have the power to make one invisible and immortal. Yoshitoshi gives the holy figure a distinctly Indian look, although the rakan wears Chinese robes. The characters displayed in the cartouche are also written in the Chinese style, as the Japanese style is more fluid and free. The glowing moon can act as both moon and halo.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (Taiso) (1839-1892) was a Japanese artist often considered as the last great master of the ukiyo-e movement of woodblock printing and painting. The term ukiyo-e translates to "pictures of the floating world" and refers to a genre of Japanese art with a wide span of imagery such as kabuki actors, folk tales, landscapes, and even erotica. This movement was critical in forming the Western perception of Japanese art.
