Description
Edwin DuBose Heyward (1885-1940) was an American author best known for his 1925 novel Porgy, which was adapted by his wife Dorothy into a 1927 play. The novel tells the story of Porgy, a crippled street-beggar in Charleston, South Carolina, in the 1920's. The character was based on the real-life Charlestonian Samuel Smalls. Some passages in the novel have the characters speaking in the Gullah language.
