A famous work in the literature of fraudulent diabolical possession, reviewing the case of Urbain Grandier, priest of St. Pierre-du-Marché in the French village of Louden. On the accusation of the Ursuline nuns of that community who were incited by their confessor, Jean Mignon, a bitter rival of Grandier's, the parish priest was charged with causing possession, tried for sorcery and burned at the stake in 1634. The episode is regarded as one of the three great scandals of its type in 17th century France. With the Grolier Club bookplate and the "sold" stamp on the front pastedown. Scarce and fascinating volume.

Wear and soiling to binding with rubbing to extremities, joints tender, some fraying of leather at head and heel of spine; a bit of light foxing and toning to interior; very good.
