Description
Papua New Guinea, Sepik River, perhaps from Iwam along the May River (East Sepik), mid-20th century CE. A long-faced, hand-carved wooden mask, made not to be worn but to be placed protectively over a doorway or other architectural feature. The face has fine details of nose, mouth, and eyes, with carved and painted features that may suggest ritual tattooing or scarification. The swirling design on the cheeks is similar to other wooden artwork known from Iwam. Size: 5.7" W x 16.25" H (14.5 cm x 41.3 cm)
