Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, mid- to late 20th century CE. A beautiful and brightly painted mask with an abstract face, perhaps made to be worn by yams. Wood heads are used in ceremonies honoring the spirits who are responsible for the growth and welfare of the community, especially those involved in the production of their primary crop, yams. Size: 9.25" W x 17.45" H (23.5 cm x 44.3 cm)
