Description
Rare souvenir sketch, metallic gold ink, untitled (crown and face), by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). Executed on a page of "7000 Eichen," published in 1985. Signed on the facing page with the artist's initials. Also signed under the drawing, "Basquiat." 11 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches. Very good condition.Provenance: Ex-collection Allan Roberts, San Francisco, California, who presumably acquired the drawing directly from the artist or through a friend of the artist, and from whom the present owner's father obtained this and other drawings. A copy of a redacted Bill of Sale signed by Allan Roberts in 1995 will accompany the lot if Preston Hall is able to obtain this document from the consignor. Allan Roberts was a noted furrier and art collector in San Francisco. He and his brother, Irwin Roberts, owned Roberts Furs, a premier decades-old fur salon located in the Roberts Building in Union Square. Shortly before his death, Allan Roberts was the victim of a foiled art burglary at his fashionable San Francisco residence, where burglars attempted to steal a large original work by Marc Chagall and other modernist works of art.Lot Note: The Basquiat Foundation does not verify works. This lot is not accompanied by a letter from Gerard Basquiat.
