The 1970 Triumph Bonneville T120 is considered by many British motorcycle historians as the high water mark in Triumph 650 development, and the year many favor as _the best Bonneville ever built." The world of high performance motorcycles was changing fast; as the Japanese stepped up with their own large bore street motorcycles such as the 750 Honda, which along with Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha, would soon come to dominate the world motorcycle market. Collectors, however, realize that the traditional British motorcycles will always have an enduring place in the classic motorcycle market, and fine examples such as the Bonneville offered today have easily stood the test of time.
In the '50s, BSA was one of the largest and richest motorcycle companies in the world, driven by the performance of the legendary Gold Star, but by the late '60s, they were forced to unitize with rival Triumph, in the end, producing very similar motorcycles that in effect competed with each other. This 1970 Bonneville represents the pinnacle of the British motorcycle industry, and the absolute top of the food chain during that era. It was available as an _R_ model with low pipes as well as the T120C, sporting enduro-style pipes.
This beautiful T120 was the subject of a highly accurate and comprehensive restoration to factory standards, finished in the original paint scheme of Astral Red and silver with discreet gold pin striping, and wearing only original parts wherever possible. A full engine rebuild, including crank, pistons, bearings, and valves was completed just a few years ago, making this a highly reliable power plant. A new clutch was installed, the four-speed gearbox was rebuilt, and the twin Amal carburetors were restored and balanced to perfection. From the frame to the polished engine cases to the seat and rubber components, everything was either correctly serviced or replaced, and done to a very high standard. The tachometer and speedometer were also restored and reset and, if you ever wanted to buy a brand-new Bonneville, this is literally as close as you can get today. After a stint in a renowned motorcycle collection, where it received only maintenance miles, it was recently acquired by the Consignor and given a complete drivetrain servicing and tune up.
As far as classic British motorcycles go, the 1970 Bonneville T120 is one of the most collectible ever built, and certainly one of the prettiest. They run great, they are fast, stop well, and handle unlike anything else from the era.
