Conceived and built with development spearheaded by Vince Piggins as Chevrolet_s new SCCA Trans-Am contender, the RPO Z/28 package was quietly introduced for the Camaro in 1967 to homologate it for racing. At its heart, the Z/28 featured a high-winding small-block V-8 engine, combining the dimensions of the 327 cylinder block and short-stroke 283 crank to yield 302 cubic-inches _ just under the SCCA-mandated displacement limit for Trans-Am racing. Highly developed underpinnings and other tweaks maximized the Z/28_s factory-underrated 290-horsepower output. All-out racing versions were most successfully campaigned by Penske Racing and piloted by star driver Mark Donohue to back-to-back SCCA Trans-Am championships in 1968 and 1969 against the ferocious Bud Moore and Shelby-prepped Mustangs. For many, the 1969 Z/28 marks the ultimate evolution of the first-generation Camaro series with a thrilling driving experience, incomparable style, and race-bred engineering.
Offered from a noted California private collection, this special Z/28 is finished in the factory-specified Burnished Brown paint color and equipped with the factory Z22 Rally Sport appearance package. It is extremely rare as one of the few examples documented from new that originally left the factory with the RPO JL8 power four-wheel disc-brake package. Performance is also considerably greater than most, with the 302 V-8 engine equipped with a factory-type Cross-Ram intake setup. Other great features include a Muncie M-21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, G-80 Positraction limited-slip rear end, a U79 AM/FM stereo radio, N33 Comfort tilt steering, N34 Comfort styled (Rosewood) steering wheel, N40 Power steering, and D55 center console with U17 Special instrumentation. Exceptionally, the entire RPO Z87 Custom interior including the carpeting remains original to the car and in near-perfect condition. Other options include A01 tinted glass, A67 fold-down rear seat, B93 door edge guards, VE3 special front bumper, and ZJ9 auxiliary lighting. Outside, D80 spoilers front and rear, a ZL2 Cowl Induction hood, and the original RPO C08 black vinyl roof covering round out this exceptionally well-equipped and optioned 1969 RS Z/28, which has just 65,732 original miles at the time of writing.
Accompanied by the original 1969 Chevrolet New Vehicle Warranty and Owner Protection Plan folder and Protect-O-Plate, the Z/28 was sold new to A. Bartoletti of Burbank, California on April 10, 1969. Other excellent original paperwork includes the original and well-preserved Chassis Broadcast Copy form listing the Camaro_s serial number and the various codes for its factory-installed engine, suspension, and mechanical components, including the codes for the RPO JL8 four-wheel disc brakes and original G84 4.10:1 rear-end gears. Also included is an original copy of the 1969 Chevrolet Pre-Delivery Service and Adjustment Check Sheet issued by the selling dealer, Community Chevrolet. The vehicle is also accompanied by all of the correct parts for the original single four-barrel intake system: the carburetor, air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, exhaust heat shields, exhaust manifold hardware, primary exhaust pipes, complete exhaust air injection system, upper alternator bracket, power steering hose bracket, and steel Cowl hood (already painted to match) to return the car to the stock intake system at the new owner_s option.
Of all 1960s American supercars, the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is one of the finest and most important of all.
