The year 1937 was filled with several events that marked new beginnings and tragic ends, all at the same time. The nation got a new start when the famous Golden Gate Bridge opened in May. The end of transatlantic airship travel came to end when the mighty Hindenburg crashed and burned in Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 6th. The world also lost a great aviation pioneer in July when Amelia Earhart went missing on a round-the-world flight in her Lockheed Electra 10E. Yes, 1937 had its ups and downs, but it was a great year for Packard. Emerging from the depths of the Great Depression, Packard had survived by catering to new markets for its fine cars. Indeed, sales of 109,518 for the calendar year were Packard_s high-point and although 90% of those sales were Series 115 and 120 cars, the true elegance of Packard was found in their senior cars with V-12 power. Packard_s V-12 cars were not cheap but, for America_s elite, it was the car to own.
The power and prestige of Packard_s mighty V-12 is beautifully displayed in this Series 1507 Convertible Victoria in classic black. Cataloged as body style number 1027, the Convertible Victoria was an expensive car selling for $4,490 when a mere $550 bought a new Plymouth. It was restored by a noted Packard Twelve specialist and has been driven only sparingly since. This Series 1507 Victoria rides on a 139.5-inch wheelbase that nicely showcases its perfect proportions. Starting at the front, Packard_s tall and impressive grille carried a sharp _V_ style that sets off its twin bullet-styled headlamps that are also complemented by a set of driving lights mounted just above its elegantly styled bumper. Long and sweeping front fenders carry twin side-mounted spare tires complete with factory metal covers and an optional folding rear luggage carrier at the rear ensures plenty of space for touring. The interior of this grand Packard is finished in gorgeous burgundy leather with a dashboard that features meticulously restored gauges with a jewel-like appearance. As a 1937, this Packard also features all of the fine improvements that made their debut in 1937 including new Safe-T-Flex independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes. Power for this Packard comes from its mighty V-12 that makes touring in this 5,345 pound car easy and effortless. So beautiful and stylish was the Convertible Victoria that Packard_s great engineer Jesse Vincent owned one himself. This Packard has yet to make its Concours and judging debuts and is sure to score high points with its superb restoration.
The 1930s gave us some of the most elegant motorcars ever built and perhaps that_s why the decade was called the Golden Age of the motorcar. This beautiful Convertible Victoria speaks to a time of classic elegance that has long passed. 1937 was a great year for the Packard Twelve, as it retained many of the classic styling cues but added the benefit of much improved drivability. It has the best combination of both looks and engineering. Having been very well restored and mechanically sorted, this gorgeous Victoria convertible is ready to tour or grace the show field once again at a moment's notice.
