Description
  • Print: Uncle Sam, the Imperialist
  • Publication Date: 1900

The depiction of "Brother Jonathan" on page 32 of the January 11, 1862 edition Harper's Weekly looks more like the modern version of Uncle Sam (except for the lack of a goatee). Prior to the 1917 Uncle Sam didn't get a standard appearance until the well-known "recruitment" image of Uncle Sam was created by James Montgomery Flagg. However at the time of the Spanish-American War (1898), there were opponents to the new Imperialistic stance of the Taft administration. Here he appears smug and pleased with himself as below him stand a very black African, a Cuban, a Filipino and an Arab. Before them lies the stars and stripes shield on a long palm frond, a symbol of peace. Probably a cigar ad, there was a similar one for patent medicines showing a bloated obese Uncle Sam (like Pres. William Howard Taft) and an after view showing him trim and fit after imbibing the new "little brown brother physic"". While most uses of the Uncle Sam image are respectful, they are not always. An important image in the development of the American national character Uncle Sam, a popular name for the government of the United States.
