Description
Portrait of Electa Stoddard Hale (b. 1799), oil on canvas, circa 1830-31, unsigned as is typical. The wealthy woman is shown with curled auburn hair, in a black dress having blossomed sleeves, gold buckle, necklace, brooch and earrings, wearing a fancy lace collar and bonnet having pink ribbon trim. She is seated in a red chair, holding an open book, large trees outside the window behind. In vintage gold molded cove frame, OS: 35- 1/2" x 30- 1/2", SS: 29- 1/2" x 24- 1/2". Cleaned and relined. Known as the "Borden Limner", the name first coined for the artist who painted the portraits of Captain Daniel Borden and his wife Mary B. Jenney, of New Bedford, MA. Artist and subject are identified on a Hirschl and Adler Gallery of New York label verso (her name misspelled as Electra). Electa was born in 1799 in Upton, Mass., married William Hale in the same town in 1819. She died in 1876.
