Antique Hand Colored French Engraving after Jean-Baptiste Du Halde Drawings c. 1720. Jean-Baptiste Du Halde, born in Paris IN 1674 and died in 1743, was a French Jesuit historian specializing in China. He did not travel to China, but collected seventeen Jesuit missionaries' reports and provided an encyclopedic survey of the history, culture and society of China and "Chinese Tartary," that is, Manchuria. Professionally framed and matted 19x13.50x1. Weight is 2 pds 9 oz. Purchased from the prestigious Altfield Gallery in Hong Kong. Sharing an interest in early Chinese furniture and Asian decorative arts, founders Amanda Clark and David Halperin established Altfield Gallery as one of the first antique galleries to specialise in 18th and early 19th century Chinese furniture.
