Description
Ancient Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. 20K gold ring with an elegantly flattened shank meeting a raised oval bezel containing an amethyst intaglio engraved with a duck, heron, or crane. Interestingly, these birds were domesticated pets, almost as popular as dogs among the ancient Romans according to Beazley. Cranes were particularly popular among gem engravers, due to the ancient belief that they were weather prophets. Size 5; Total Weight 2.1 grams
