A black japanned compound polarising monocular microscope Cooke, Troughton and Simms Limited, York, circa 1925 The tube with rack and pinion coarse and fine screw focus adjustment and signed COOKE, TROUGHTON & SIMMS, LTD, MADE AT YORK. ENGLAND to front above pivoted internal pinhole assembly, sliding and rotating filter carriers, single objective and circular stage fitted with X and Y screw adjusting Vernier slide clips onto a rotating table with Vernier degree scale to circumference, the underside with sub-stage condenser and pivoted plano-concave mirror, the limb stamped with CTS monogram and serial number M703087 to top edge and pivoted via axis support behind the stage, on U shaped foot inscribed with repeat monogram to rear, in original mahogany box with two additional objective lenses and an eyepiece lens (some vacant apertures for other accessories), the box 35.5cm (14ins) high excluding handle. Provenance: The Maurice Gillet collection of microscopy, inventory ref. G3470. The partnership between Edward Troughton and William Simms is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as formed in 1826 and operating primarily from addresses in Fleet Street, London. Edward died in 1835 followed by William in 1860; the business was subsequently continued by their successors until around 1920 when it was acquired by Vickers Ltd. Gillet records the firm of T. Cooke and Sons of York being acquired by Vickers Ltd. in 1916. Both firms were merged in 1922 when the name was changed to Cooke, Troughton and Simms then latterly to Vickers Instruments Ltd.
