Description

A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ELEVATION OF THE CROSS, CIRCA 1890. The feast day celebrating the Elevation of the honorable and life-giving cross is based on a ceremony that is believed to have originated in Jerusalem after the dedication of the Basilica of the Resurrection, built by the Emperor Constantine. Tradition relates that Constantine’s mother, Helena discovered the true cross. Bishop Makarius had pointed out to her the sight where the holy sepulcher was said to be, and there she found the cross. This icon depicts the cross being raised up by Bishop Makarius of Jerusalem. On the left, the Emperor Constantine and his mother, Helena, look on. The Elevation of the Cross is a major Church feast day, held on September 14 (September 27 N.S.). 20.75 inches x 17.75 inches (53 x 45 cm).
