Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Drape Decoration, Manhattan, NY or New Jersey origin, early 19th century, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, footed, base and narrow opening, decorated with an impressed inverted drape design, highlighted in cobalt slip. This jar is the first of its specific type we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Two vertical cracks on side of jar, measuring 7 3/4" and 7 1/2", both continuing a short distance onto underside, where they each form a T. A few other short, minor lines at base. Base chips. Light exfoliation to underside.
