Item Details
Description
This lot consists of the 30 volume antique set Collection complette des oeuvres de Mr. de Voltaire (Geneva: [Cramer], 1768-1777). Published during Voltaire's lifetime, this complete set is bound in full leather. Each volume displays gilt ruling and embellishments to the covers, red and black spine labels with gilt lettering, five raised bands, and gilt ornamentation to the spines. Each book is adorned with marbled page edges and marbled endpapers. The first volume contains an engraved frontispiece by J. J. Flipart, after Hubert Gravelot, with caption "Ingenium cui fit, cui mens divinor, atque os Magna fonaturum, des nominis hujus honorem." Engraved portraits of Gravelot and Voltaire are also present at the front of this volume. Further engraved plates after Gravelot appear in subsequent volumes, as well as occasional engraved diagrams/textual illustrations.

The first 24 volumes in this set were published by Cramer under Voltaire's control, with the remaining volumes possibly first published in France. Works contained in these volumes include "The Henriade," histories of Charles XII and Louis XIV, and "The Discourses on Man."

Voltaire ( 21 November 1694 - 30 May 1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher famous for his wit, his attacks on the established Catholic Church, and his advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and separation of church and state.

Hubert-Francois Bourguignon, commonly known as Gravelot (26 March 1699 - 20 April 1773), was a French engraver, a famous book illustrator, designer and drawing-master.

The Cramer brothers, Gabriel and Philibert Cramer, were 18th-century publishers from Geneva, and were the official publishers of Voltaire. Their company, sometimes called simply Cramer, published in a wide range of cities throughout Europe. The brothers were also active in high society (biographical information courtesy of Wikipedia).
