Item Details
Description
This lot consists of the folio "Historien der Nederlande, en haar Naburen Oorlogen tot het Jaar 1612" by Emanuel Van Meteren (Amsterdam: Jan Jacob Schipper, 1663). This improved edition of Meterens history of the Netherlands is bound in brown pebbled cloth, with blind-stamped ruling to the covers and spine, and five raised bands. The text is composed of 32 books, bound together. The engraved title page features a historiated border, depicting vignettes symbolizing the kings of various nations; the continents Europe, Asia, America, and Africa; two symbolic sculptures of powerful political and ecclesiastical figures; and vignette portraits of the author and Mauritio d Nasavia (Maurice, Prince of Orange, or Maurice of Nassau). A historiated initial adorns the start of the text, and a biographical sketch of the author's life and death, written by Simeon Ruytinck, is present at the front of the volume. The text is printed in double columns, and is ornamented with engraved portrait vignettes, depicting clergymen and heads of state, as well as further decorative initials. An index ("register") is present at the rear of the volume.

Emanuel van Meteren or Meteeren (6 September 1535 - 11 April 1612) was a Flemish historian and Consul for "the Traders of the Low Countries" in London. He was born in Antwerp, the son of Sir Jacobus van Meteren, Dutch financier and publisher of early English versions of the Bible, and Ottilia Ortellius, of the famous Ortellius family of mapmakers, and nephew of the cartographer Abraham Ortelius (courtesy of Wikipedia). Van Meteren was known for writing histories that included only events from his own time period, thus, his histories ended with the year 1612.

Condition
The exterior of the volume displays minor wear, with slight rubbing to the cloth at the spine edges, and minor bumping to the bottom edge. The binding is firm, with new endpapers. The outer edge of the textblock is toned, with some minor soiling. The original endpapers and pages at the front of the volume display mild creasing, and faint moisture markings appear at the top edge. The interior is otherwise largely clean and bright, with scattered foxing and occasional spots of moisture and soiling. Pages show minor rippling. The illustrations are bright and well-preserved.
