Four (4) Signed East TN Documents, inc. 2 Col. F. A. Ramsey. 1st item: Colonel Francis A. Ramsey (1764-1820) signed, handwritten court expenditure list documenting the various fees accrued during the case of John Dugan and Robert Shields, April term of 1797. 6 3/4" H x 8" W. 2nd item: Colonel Francis A. Ramsey signed sheriff summons order with handwritten text stating "State of Tennessee, to the Sheriff of Cocke County...we command you...James Gilliland...to render before the judges, into at the court hou(s)e in Knoseville [sic] the Fourth Monday of September...Witne(s)s Francis A Ramsey...Fourth Monday of March A.D. 1799 and XXIII year of American Independence, with later additions en verso. 6 5/8" H x 8 1/4" W. Biography: Francis Alexander Ramsey was born in Pennsylvania in 1764 to Scotch-Irish parents, and moved to Greene County, Tennessee in 1783. That year, North Carolina (which controlled what is now East Tennessee) opened up Cherokee lands north of the French Broad to settlement, and Ramsey, James White, and several other explorers began making excursions into what is now the Knoxville area in search of new land. He was issued a grant for Swan Pond and its surrounding land in November 1786. Ramsey's rise to prominence in the failed State of Franklin (1784Ò1788) kept him occupied for the remainder of the decade, and it wasn't until 1792, after he had been appointed clerk for the newly formed Southwest Territory, that he decided to move to Swan Pond, which lay just outside the territory's new capital at Knoxville. London-trained architect Thomas Hope designed the house, and probably built it between 1795 and 1797. 3rd-4th items: Two William Swan signed sheriff summons with handwritten text, one for Sevier County, dated February 20, 1825, and one for Anderson County, dated August 20, 1833. Sheets range in size from 6 1/8" H x 7 3/8" W to 7 1/4" H x 8" W. All items American, late 18th/early 19th century. Provenance: Collection of Charles and Ann Wells, Nashville, Tennessee.
