Antique Political Publication Regarding Trial of the Assassins of Abraham Lincoln. Title on cover: "Opinion on the Constitutional Power of the Military to Try and Execute the Assassins of the President" by Attorney General James Speed. Printed in Washington by the Government Printing Office in 1865. In this publication James Speed analyzes and concludes that the assassins should be tried in military court, instead of civilian court, for offending the laws of war. There are 16 printed pages plus covers and the page size is about 5-3/4" x 9". Previous ownership name on back cover reads "Hon. A. Wylie" (research reveals that Wylie received a recess appointment from President Lincoln to what was then called the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia in 1863). Condition: back cover is detached. fragile covers with numerous tears and paper loss. period ink writing on the back cover. overall soiling, staining, and foxing spots.
