Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari / Wari culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. Hand-carved from a single piece of wood, this is a palette or tablet (tableta) for holding and inhaling snuff. Much of the palette consists of a slightly sunken, rectangular area; one end has a carved face with two salmon pink shell eyes. The ritual ingestion of snuff to induce a hallucinogenic state was a crucial component of Huari shamanism, and archaeologists have found drug paraphernalia with a variety of interesting iconography - plants, flowers, and, like this one, human figures. Size: 7.2" L x 3.05" W x 1.2" H (18.3 cm x 7.7 cm x 3 cm)
