Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fabulous hand-carved wooden head of an ancestral figure. The elongated visage features inlaid white shell eyes, one which shows a spiraling form creating a hypnotic effect, as well as a prominent nose with broad nostrils, smooth cheeks, risen cheekbones, and full lips held in a gentle smile, all below an extended, protruding brow. A pair of round ears fitted with hemispherical adornments flanks the fascinating face. The remarkable example is further embellished with black paint that encircles the eyes and chocolate brown streaks of iron-rich pigment, which serve to both reenforce the piece and add decoration to this handsome visage. Size: 6" W x 13" H (15.2 cm x 33 cm); 17.75" H (45.1 cm) on included custom stand.
