Bronze and repoussé, partially fire gilded, Nepal. ca. 17th to 18th cent.

Sitatara, the White Tara and bodhisattva of compassion (also interpreted as a “savior”), sits in fully consummate padmasana (lotus position) on an impressively resplendent lotus throne. She has one hand held in the gesture of wish granting (varadamudra), while the upraised hand should hold the stem of a lotus blossom (lost) and has its raised fingers in the gesture of karanamudra, or demon defense. The facial features are fine and sensually crafted, the feminine sensuality also particularly emphasized in the full breasts and narrow waist. The body, ears and five-pointed crown feature detailed, exactingly executed and diverse jewelry. The most prominent feature of this form of Sitara are her seven eyes, which are located, apart from her two natural eyes, on her palms, the soles of her feet and her forehead and which symbolize her superior wisdom and farsightedness. To the sides of her shoulders are lotus blossoms; long queues of hair and a tall chignon atop her head. This Tara is composed of repoussé and cast parts, as was typical for this technique. Head, upper body, arms and hands are cast and ungilded, with the exception of the bracelets and jewelry. In contrast, the lotus seat and lotus throne, garland shawl, lotus blossoms, crown and chignon are wrought. The bottom of the base is closed with wood, but, on the whole the statue is exceptionally well preserved. Beautiful gilding and cold painting. The crown and lotus blossoms attached to the sides are removable.
