Very high relief garden verdigris patina antique 19C or perhaps earlier Japanese Meiji bronze koi bowl, hibachi or ikebana type vessel, pot or vase consisting of a 3-D handled 360 degree modeled hillside genre landscape with famers, homes, animals and foliage in spectacular detail. Features a separate base plate with a crane and marsh motif and smooth bronze back similar to a mirror or perhaps by a mirror maker. Surmounted by a geometric bronze vertical border lip that has a perhaps Chinese inspiration.

For a related example of meiji 3D high relief building and landscape casting please see a pair of censers sold by the Sheppard auction house, Durrow, Ireland on LiveAuctioneers May 1st, 2014 for 12,300 euros or USD$ 17,056 in 2014 $ incl. buyer premium.

9 inches h. x 14.5 inches w. x 12 inches d., the base opening and mirror-shaped base are approx. 8.5 x 7 inches.

Provenance: Tampa Bay, Florida sale of estate items advertised as from the Hill family Asian decorative arts collection formed beginning in the 1940s by a wealthy Texas socialite and her world traveler husband, their heirs since retired to Florida’s Gulf Coast and the collection dispersed by a local firm. Please see a Ming or Qing sang de boeuf water buffalo, Lot 78, from the same collection as well as other Japanese antiques from a Palm Beach area collection elsewhere in this sale.

Condition: In garden patina verdigris estate discovery condition. Some small scattered sidewall holes in the casting. A couple of grey spots to the sidewall that may be blemishes or old repairs. Vertical lip is a thick casting, vessel is a fairly this casting and base plate is a medium casting - we are not sufficiently familiar with meiji casting to speculate as to the technique, nature or origin of each element but to us each seems somewhat distinct. Base interior opening edges are brittle. Adhesions and heavy patina wear to base plate bird relief - reverse of base plate has old dark bronze patina with heavy verdigris and oxidation. General wear throughout, as is, to conserve. The crispness of detail for the age and type of piece is amazing.
