patinated bronze
after the 1863 terracotta, inscribed "Frederick Volck/1863/Richmond, Virginia" at back, on a round black marble plinth.
overall h. 19", w. 11", d. 9-1/4"

Notes: Volck was born in Germany but as a young man moved to Virginia where he was employed by the Confederate Naval Ordnance and Hydrography Department. His brother Adalbert, a satirist and caracaturist, was also actively involved in the Confederacy. Volck's sculpture of General Lee was commissioned during the war and was primarily intended as a means of increasing and continuing support for the war effort and the Confederate cause.
Condition
In overall very good condition. Marble base: a few small nicks at edges.
