Item Details
Description
Egypt, Late Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 672 to 332 BCE. A lovely near miniature vase carved from banded alabaster, of a cylindrical form with a slightly flared upper end, a rolled rim, and flat base. A fine-grained, translucent variety of gypsum, a hydrous calcium sulphate, alabaster is typically either white or streaked with russet hues. Soft enough to be carved and etched, alabaster is often used to create statuary and vessels like this example. Size: 1.875" W x 3.125" H (4.8 cm x 7.9 cm)

Warm and luminous alabaster has been crafted throughout the ages in ancient Sumer, Babylon, Assyria, as well as Egypt; however, deposits have also been found in Algeria, England, the US, Belgium, India, Turkey, Spain, Cyprus, and Italy.

Provenance: Ex-Private New York Collection; Ex-John N. Winnie, Jr. Collection, Georgia, 1980s-90s.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
