This is one of the finest Sioux Native American Indian gunstock spontoon war clubs offered for sale. The piece dates to circa 1870 showing a hardwood gunstock construction with early original green paint and having solid brass trade tacks in period correct wonderful designs. The gunstock haft has three small pierced holes that may have held a drop of beads or feather decorations at one time. The tomahawk features the excellent large Revolutionary War () spontoon forged iron blade having the notch-cut end and is secured in place with poured lead and an old nail. The piece shows the correct signs of age and use and is truly an excellent example. The spear point spontoon blade measures 5 inches long. This historic and important war club has been pictured in the 2009 publication/book “The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” page 134 figure 208. The war club was purchase by the current owner from the late well known antique weapons collector, Arnold Marcus Chernoff.
