Item Details
Description
The lot features a wonderful gunstock war club with spike blade having punched stars and inlayed pewter silver crescent moons, from the Central Plains Native American Indians dating to the late 19th Century. The piece shows a solid wood classic gunstock war club pattern with flaring head which curves towards the elbow which shows a forged iron spike held into place with an iron pin. From the spike the club shows a tapered haft handle with slight raised median carving. At the end is a classic flaring tapered point end, slightly like a bird's head, often seen on other gunstock war clubs from the period, with a pierced hole which would have held a drop of feathers, beadwork ,or wrist throng. The outside edge of the entire club from just above the gripping area on both sides shows a rare punched six-point (6-point) star pattern. At the top of the gunstock on both sides hows an inset or inlayed thin crescent moon in a silver pewter held into place with tack nails. The outside edge shows a hot file burned finish. The piece has a collection museum number of 13-51 just below the forged iron spike. The forged spike starts in the body of the club with a square shank which tapers to round, and finaly the point. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Jeb Taylor of Clearmont, Wyoming (with many pieces of his in several March in Montana and Hindman / Cowan's auctions), ex- Bill Begoon, and a private Wisconsin collection. Good overall condition with several chips, nicks and scratched, but overall solid condition. Measures 27.25"L by approx. 11"W. The spike protrudes 4.5"L from the stock.*
