Description
DESCRIPTION: A collection of sixty-five Civil War soldier's letters written by Sidney Marlin, Signal Corps, to his wife Sallie Marlin in Willet, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Dated between February 11, 1864 and July 16, 1866. Most with envelopes. Some on Signal Corps United States Army letterhead. Locations include Martinsburg, Falls Church, Cedar Creek (Shenandoah Valley, VA), Harrisonburg, Winchester, Kearnstown (VA) near Winchester, Harper's Ferry, near Alexandria (VA), Cumberland (MD), Charleston (WV), Woodstock (VA). Early letters written during Signal Corps Camp of Instruction at Georgetown, DC including one written on a US Army payroll form (also one dated Signal Camp, Georgetown D.C., April 16th, 64 written on behalf of Marlin by S.B. Babbitt informing Mrs. Marlin that he is leaving camp in an hour or two probably for Western Virginia and not to write him until she hears from him once he reaches the post). Other letters include general camp life, current surroundings, the men, requests for money (as he has not been paid). Of special note is a hand drawn map of "Camp Cedar Creek & surrounding country before the battle of Oct 19th" with a description of the battle. Some other mentions of note include the election and Lincoln (9/13/64), his position as acting sergent (sic) of a squad at Gen. Sheriden's headquarters and fighting with Gen. Early and Longstreet (11/20/64) , his sending home of a "mock letter" for his wife to rewrite and return requesting a furlough (12/5/64), the mourning of Lincoln in Washington (4/22/65), marching of Rebel prisoners (3/12/65), notice that he sent home rings made from the screw of a rebel shell, and that he would send home a little boy and his sister if he could (they are slaves but they are as white as any boy or girl could be). Also includes the first letter Sidney wrote to Sallie (prio to their marriage), dated January 12, 1858, expressing his desire "to cultivate further acquaintance with [her]" and "wheather (sic) such a thing would be agreeable to" her or not as well as a March 22 love letter where he states his "affection for [her] is no imaginary love but the purest adoration of the heart". Together with a signed typed letter from Mr. M.M. Quaife of the Detroit Public Library dated February 22, 1939 to Sidney and Sallie's son Robert requesting to see the Civil War letters for their historical significance. MEASUREMENTS: Various. CONDITION: Some fading (one illegible) with expected spots of toning/foxing. Overall complete and legible. Scattered small fold tears. Envelope losses.
