Description
SCHOOL OF EUGENE DELACROIX (19TH CENTURY) "LE SERVITEUR" PORTRAIT OF A BOY, oil on canvas, striking depiction of a North African, possibly Moroccan, subject wearing bright red turban and green jacket while holding a platter bearing red grapes, no signature located, retains an old printed label for E. and A. Silberman Galleries, New York, N. Y. attached to stretcher verso (now covered with backing paper). Housed in a 19th-century frame with artist's plaque marked "Eugene Delacroix" at lower sight edge. Mid 19th century. 23 3/4" x 19 1/2" sight, 31" x 27" OA.
Very good visual condition with minor scattered inpainting to face, hands, and clothing, other possible conservation/restoration concealed under heavy varnish. Frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: From the collection of Benjamin Franklin Garber of Harrisonburg, VA and New York, NY.
Catalogue Note: According to an old typed note included with the painting, possibly provided by the Silberman Galleries in New York, the present work "might belong to a series of figures sketched and painted during Delacroix's Moroccan trip in 1832, the inspiration of which was to serve him during subsequent years. A similar figure appears in the famous painting of 'Noce Juive dans le Maroc' ('Night of the Jewish Wedding') of 1839, in the Louvre." The portrait also includes a technical analysis report performed by the Balboa Art Conservation Center in San Diego, CA.
