Description
Portuguese, circa 16th century. An embroidered and quilted bedspread, in red and gold silk and red velvet, with an intricate scrolled and foliated motif with a fringed border, float mounted with brass pins against a white fabric background in a gold leaf frame. Approximate height (framed) 76.25", width 95", height (bedspread only) 68.5", width 85". Includes appraisal, which states this piece purportedly belonged to the Queen of Portugal. Provenance: From the Estate of Mr. Herbert R. Matthews, Sr. and Mrs. Patricia Matthews of Atlanta, Georgia.
