Item Details

Description

John Pyke (English (London/Holborn & Bedford Row) active 1710-1762), first half 18th century. A George II japanned and chinoiserie lacquered longcase clock with molded bonnet top over arched cornice and three-quarter columns enclosing shaped glazed door opening to a conforming brass dial with subsidiary seconds dial and square date aperture with Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic minutes, within foliate and mask engraved spandrels, the arch fitted with an etched medallion engraved "John Pyke" within dolphin spandrels, the break-arch trunk door decorated in raised polychrome and gilt figural pavilion with deer and landscape, the whole raised on a rectangular step molded edge plinth, also decorated. Approximate height 89.25", width 20.5", depth 10". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Stephen Fleming of Atlanta, Georgia.

Condition

Lacking finials to the bonnet. Top door is not hinged and lifts off; appears to be correct to the piece. Strike and movement is in working condition however seconds hand is missing. Seat board is screwed down. Pendulum is not attached to rod. Brass cap weights are in good condition. The movement does appear to be original to the case and is now screwed to the wood. Wear to case commensurate with age and use. Overall with significant craquelure, lifting, and losses to lacquer, with areas of inpainting and repair. Water damage to case. Requires professional restoration and repair. No other visible signs of damage or repair.
