Description
STAMPED "B.C. MILLER", BALTIMORE, MARYLAND STONEWARE PAN, salt-glazed, "1" gallon capacity mark, truncated conical form with squared, overhanging rim. Benjamin C. Miller, Baltimore, MD. 1830-1833. 5 3/8" H, 10" D rim.
Undamaged except for a light hairline off rim and associated chip to interior below the rim.
Literature: See Kille - "Distinguishing Marks and Flowering Designs: Baltimore's Utilitarian Stoneware Industry", Ceramics in America 2005, p. 104, fig. 22, for a crock of the same clay and color, bearing an identical maker's stamp and capacity mark. Kille comments that it is "an extremely rare find."
Catalogue Note: Benjamin Miller was identified as a potter in the 1831 Baltimore city directory, located at Low Street near Aisquith Street. In 1833 he was listed at Douglas Street near Forest Street. John Kille also illustrates a sand caster inscribed by/for Miller while working at William H. Amoss’s East Street shop in 1830.
