ANTHONY QUERVELLE (PHILADELPHIA, ACTIVE 1817-1856) CLASSICAL CARVED MAHOGANY DRESSING TABLE / STAND, adjustable mirror held within columnar stanchions, marble insert top, robust tapered columnar standard above shaped base raised on carved paw feet. Pine secondary wood. Old refinished surface with warm color. Circa 1820. 78 1/2" HOA, 36 3/4" W, 21 1/4" D.
Good overall condition with minor wear, losses, and repairs to veneers.
Catalogue Note: Antoine "Anthony" Gabriel Quervelle (1789-1856) emigrated from France in 1817 and settled in Philadelphia, bringing with him the influences of French Empire taste in design. His highly ornamented and stylized furniture forms were quite popular in his day, and he was even commissioned to create several pieces for the White House in 1829. Examples of his work reside in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Winterthur, among others.
