Description
A Russian porcelain cup and saucer from the Coronation Service for Emperor Alexander III, the Imperial Porcelain Factory, 1889 and 1903. The cup decorated with the new style crowned double headed eagle emblazoned with the shield of St. George against a red ground and seals from various Russian cities placed among the up-spread wings . The underside of the cup with the green underglaze factory mark of Alexander III dated 1889, the underside of the saucer with the green underglaze mark of Nicholas II dated 1903. 1501-130. Height of cup: 2 1/4" (5.7 cm). Diameter of saucer: 5 1/2" (14 cm). Although originally designed for the coronation of Alexander III and Maria Feodorovna in 1883, the simple elegance of the service allowed it to be used in multiple palaces over the following decades and additions were made during the reigns of Alexander III and Nicholas II.
Condition
Overall very good condition, some small wear to gilding on the rim of the cup and on the saucer. One tiny chip to the underside of the saucer.
