Far East, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 century CE. A beautiful example of a ceramic horse standing on an integral plinth created during the Ming Dynasty. The horse gazes forward with a wide-eyed alert expression and stands stalwart upon all fours, wearing an ensemble of saddle, skirt, and bridle and showing ample traces of his colored surface - green, red, tawny beige, black, and white. This handsome animal would have been a fine companion in the afterlife. Size: 11" L x 10.75" H (27.9 cm x 27.3 cm)

Who can say enough about the influence of the horse throughout the history of China! The horse played a significant role in the unification of the Chinese Empire, as the ancients could communicate to parties near and far due to the great speed of these noble steeds. The horse also assisted the military to conquer distant lands and grow the empire. As the desire for stronger, faster breeds grew, the ancients imported horses from Central Asia, leading to the creation of the famous Silk Road. This example is somewhat unusual in that it depicts a young pony; just imagine the mature stallion he became!
