I listen to the sound of cloth being pounded as the moon shines serenely and believe that there is someone else who has not yet gone to sleep — Tsunenobu Karakoromo Utsu koe kikeba Tsuki kiyomi Mada nenu hito o Sora ni shiru kana Minamoto no Tsunenobu was known as a tanka poet and biwa (Japanese lute) player, despite his main profession being a Heian court official. While Tsunenobu was watching the moon from his Kyoto mansion in the autumn night, he heard the sound of clothes being struck. This sound is linked with the concept of a woman waiting for her husband to come home. Hence, this poem implies that one of his lovers is looking up at the moon while he himself is doing the same, but from a different place. When Tsunenobu finished composing his tanka, a demon from the sky recited a Tang poem. His frightened servants prayed for Buddha, and the monster went away without causing any harm. Tsunenobu wears a formal hat and Heian attendant’s robe adorned with beautiful patterns which may have been inspired from Chinese dress. We may assume that the monster was blown away by the wind with the depiction of the dark grey sky and rousing clouds.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (Taiso) (1839-1892) was a Japanese artist often considered as the last great master of the ukiyo-e movement of woodblock printing and painting. The term ukiyo-e translates to "pictures of the floating world" and refers to a genre of Japanese art with a wide span of imagery such as kabuki actors, folk tales, landscapes, and even erotica. This movement was critical in forming the Western perception of Japanese art.
