Description
18th Century Qing Dynasty Chinese large silk embroidery Buddhist Thangka of Shakyamuni Buddha Live Story in Miracles at Shravasti. Vertical rectangular panel, masterly seemed with metallic silk thread portraying Shakyamuni Buddha (Tibetan: sha kya tu pa, sang gye. English: the Enlightened One, Sage of the Shakya Clan) life story vignettes 1700 - 1799.
Depicting Shakyamuni dressed in red monastic robes, without ornaments known as nirmanakaya appearance. Serene face and pendulous earlobes beneath ushnisha. Right chest bared, with hand raised at heart level performing Abhaya Mudra, and left hand resting upward on the lap performing Dhyana Mudra. Seated in vajra position with right over left leg, both faced upward; upon a moon shaped lotus blooms throne, with all manifestation deities surrounding the chakra. According to the life story of Shakyamuni Buddha he once stayed at Shravasti in Northern India and over the course of fifteen days performed fifteen miracles or magical displays. Generally paintings of the miracles are included in the sets of paintings depicting the life story. Enclosed within orange-red floral square band, before the royal-yellow borders terminating the vertical wide line beneath. All set against interlocking pattern blue silk ground. These compositions belong to painting that depict all of the deities described in the mandalas of the Vairochana, Tattvasamgraha or Sarvadurgati Parishodhana Tantras of the Charya and Yoga classifications of Tantric literature.

Mark on upper right, a six golden thread script -KaiShu- characters within red rectangular border, QianLong Reign Period of Great Qing.

PROVENANCE:
Private collection of W. E. Bradley of Reading, England; by inheritance, records bought from Dickins & Jones, Ltd. Regent ST & Argyl ST, London in February 1929. Bradley's family collections can be found from Lot-120- through Lot-125, and Lot-116.
