Description
PENNSYLVANIA DATED LINEN PLAIN-WEAVE HAND TOWEL / SHOW TOWEL, with linen cross-stitch and running-stitch embroidery and fringe, rectangular, with self-fringe at the bottom, top flap also with self-fringe; design featuring four pairs of peahens on top flap, signature below flap "Maria Stauffer" separated by flower urn, above a row of stitching from edge to edge, above date "1835" outlined by rectangle and flanked by two large urns of flowers. Possibly Adams Co., Pennsylvania. Dated 1835. 62" x 19 1/2" OA.
Excellent condition with strong retention of color to embroidery.
Literature: Documented as in Gehret - This is the Way I Pass My Time, p. 277, no. 705.
Provenance: From the Allentown Art Museum to benefit future acquisitions for the Museum's textile collection.
Catalogue Note: A Maria "Polly" Stauffer was born in 1817 in Adams Co., Pennsylvania to Christian Stauffer and Katrina Wurtz/Wertz.
